Restorer & Violin Maker

Nose Kosei

Working on violins, violas and cellos in Cremona, Italy and in Japan.

Biography

Reading the old masters' hands.

Born in Wakayama, Japan — former name Wano — and played the violin from an early age. Trained in Cremona, and now working between Italy and Japan on restoration, making and setup, alongside 3D scanning and CNC work, and diagnostic imaging analysis.

Before Cremona

Began playing the violin as a child in Wakayama, and was awarded the Encouragement Prize in the violin category, high-school division, at the 16th Wakayama Prefecture Music Competition.

Training in Cremona

Graduated in 2010 from the International School of Violin Making in Cremona — I.P.I.A.L.L., today the Istituto di Istruzione Superiore “Antonio Stradivari” — studying principally under Lorenzo Marchi.

Apprenticed at the workshop of Sandro Asinari while still a student, and stayed on as his assistant for several years after graduating.

Playing alongside making

Founded a quintet with fellow violin makers, playing first violin and performing across Italy over several years.

Further training

Bow making, and the repair and restoration of bows. Acoustics and setup, studied with Luca Primon, Gregg Alf and Andrea Ortona. Repair and restoration of stringed instruments, and an internship at the Museo del Violino.

Today

Trained at Atelier Blot Violins and remains on its restoration staff.

Independently of the atelier, also handles the sale and maintenance of instruments in Japan.

New technology for historical instruments

Beyond regular work, 3D scanning and CNC work used in restoration, and the digital archiving of instruments.

Diagnostic imaging analysis carried out in collaboration with research institutes and companies — understanding the condition of an instrument, and reading what it has to say.
